Helicopter Rides and a Singing Bride: Nicola & Aidan

Cold, hard evidence that a small wedding can be epic!

The couple at the centre of today's real wedding, Nicola and Aidan, were forced to make major adjustments to their plans due to Covid-19, including changing their venue, and reducing their guest numbers to just 25, but the end result was no less magical for it! In fact, their ceremony at St. Peters Tin Church and reception at Muckno Lodge in Co. Monaghan, is chock-full of inspiration, in the form of wild, natural florals, elegant bridal party style, and some completely unique details, not least their chosen mode of wedding transport! Alex Zarodov Photography has been kind enough to allow us to share the imagery from their day, so let's dive in!

Nicola tells us that she first met Aidan when she worked in Galway, and he was visiting friends there after graduation. She says, "He had been pursuing me from our home, but I had passed no remarks (We lived only five minutes from each other in Monaghan)! We met up when he was in Galway and he asked me on our first date at the Christmas markets. The rest is history, I suppose!"

Years later, Aidan popped the question on their son's 4th birthday! "Aidan decided to bring us all on a small hike to the top of Carrickatee Rocks," Nicola remembers. "As we got to the top, everyone admired the view of the lake and windmills at sunset and there wasn’t a word from Aidan. We proceeded down the wild track, when Aidan decided he wanted to go back up to the top get a 'Panoramic photo'. As Chloe and Fabian (my sister and boyfriend) were getting the photo, Aidan got down on one knee, with our daughter, Willow, in a baby carrier on his chest and our son, A.J., stood beside him. It was the biggest shock ever and of course I couldn’t wait to say yes!"

Nicola and Aidan tell us that their top priority for their wedding day was the comfort of their family members and friends. "I tried to think of everything down to blankets for guests for the evening time, and coffee, tea and nibbles after the church," Nicola says.

Nicola and Aidan wanted their two gorgeous children, 5-year-old A.J. and 18-month-old Willow, to take centre stage on the big day. "Our two children were the focus point, and they had such a good time," Nicola says. "Seeing them all dressed up and excited for the day was one of our highlights."

Nicola and Aidan had planned to get married at Ballyliffin Lodge in Donegal, but decided to move their wedding closer to home due to uncertainty around Covid-19. "We met Fiona, who owns Muckno Lodge, and we instantly fell in love," Nicola tells us. "The main room was big enough to hold our 25 guests, and it had rooms for all the family to stay. It also had a small house right beside it, where Aidan got ready on the morning of the wedding. The bridal party got ready in the main house. Nothing was too much to ask the owner, she allowed everything we wanted. The Lodge was bright and airy, and I could instantly see where I wanted everything."

Aidan surprised his bride with some very unconventional wedding transport on the morning of the wedding! "The helicopter was a highlight!" she says. "It took me from Muckno Lodge to the church and it was amazing!" Aidan got a surprise too, when a rally car arrived to bring him to the church!

The couple were also keen to reflect their personalities in the music they chose. "I walked up the aisle to ‘Apple Tree Hill’ by Keywest, and, when I got to the top of the aisle, I sang the remainder of the song, which surprised everyone and got Aidan crying (bonus!) We walked out as husband and wife to ‘You Can Call Me Al’, it was so good!"

Nicola describes the couple's big day as, "natural, boho, relaxed, rustic, and wild."

Nicola's advice to engaged couples is to, "just go with what you want. Everyone will have their own opinions and I would advise to keep most things to yourselves and do exactly what you want!"

After the wedding, Nicola and Aidan managed to steal away for a few nights close to home, and have planned another staycation for later this Summer. "We are heading to the Galgorm and then on to Ballyliffin Lodge (our original venue)", Nicola says. "We are so excited, we cannot wait!"

Thanks so much to Nicola and Aidan for sharing their gorgeous Muckno Lodge wedding with us, and to Alex Zarodov for providing the beautiful imagery! There are even more photographs to swoon over in the gallery below.
